Safflower, a new Chinese medicine brand for health-conscious women, combines pulse diagnosis instruments and app with daily records to give personalized conditioning advice and fitness tracking. Helping people stay healthy easily.

Design Background

Through the research, we found that traditional Chinese medicine is still widely accepted by young people. Among them, women are the majority. However, modern people expect the treatment to be quick and efficient, which reduces the willingness of the young to take traditional Chinese medicine.

User Pain Point

Through the in-depth interview and survey with 泰昌堂 Chinese clinic and 5 women, we found that the users’ pain points when they go see traditional Chinese doctors are:

"It takes too long to get well."

"I can't see the obvious effect."

"I need to know which symptoms require a visit to a traditional Chinese doctor."

Target Users

Health-conscious women from 30-50 years old, don’t have enough time or knowledge to take good care of themselves.

GOALS

◆ Postpartum recovery
◆ Menopause relief

FRUSTRATIONS

◆ Lack of time
◆ Don’t know how to start

Design Goal

“How might we use remote health records to see the effectiveness of TCM and enhance women’s willingness to treat gynaecological problems in the long term?”

Design Concept

Portable

#simple #light #easy to carry

After interviewing professionals, we found two precautions to be kept in mind :
a. The need for light-shading when measuring.
b. Hands need to be relaxed when measuring.

a. Easy to carry & measure
b. More gentle and soft feel

Household

#sense of ritual #intimate #gentle

Firstly, we choose the mirror as the carrier since it can easily fit into people’s lives.

We decided to make a mock-up to figure out which shape is more suitable for users’ hands.

Mockup

We tried four models to confirm that the hand can fit the instrument well, and the bird-shaped model feels and looks the best.

UI Design

We chose five critical functions based on the user’s problem and need. Through the daily record functions, the doctors can keep control of patients’ state of illness. We also designed a traditional Chinese pharmacy, which issues users a Chinese herbal medicine card with a delicate drawing.

Market Survey

Reflection

This project delves into the relationships between traditional Chinese medicine, personalized medicine, and patients. I think the most challenging part of it is transforming the abstract concept into visualized data. Therefore, we visited a lot of Chinese Medicine clinics and asked the doctors, ” What do you need to know about your patients’ symptoms and habits to give them the best prescriptions?” and whether this design is helpful for them to have a better understanding of the patient’s condition.
It is a trend that software-hardware co-designs are making peoples’ lives more convenient.
